What happens when individuals living with paralysis and their families are given the opportunity to try something new in a place where accessibility is built into the experience?
They do far more than participate. They discover new possibilities, build confidence, form friendships, and create memories together.
That is exactly what happened during the 2026 Virginia Beach Adventurous Weekend, hosted by Determined2Heal and SPINALpedia. The Spinal Cord Injury Law Firm was proud to support this special event as a Platinum Sponsor.
Over the course of the weekend, participants and their families could choose from 15 accessible adventures and activities, including adaptive waterskiing, pickleball, beach activities, and many other experiences. Every activity was provided completely free of charge.
For some participants, this was their first time trying a particular activity since sustaining a spinal cord injury. Others were returning to something they once loved but were unsure they would ever experience again. Families had the chance to relax, have fun, and spend time together in a setting where disability was understood and accessibility was expected.
Those moments matter.
A spinal cord injury can change nearly every part of a person’s life. Individuals and families may suddenly find themselves navigating medical care, caregiving, accessibility barriers, financial uncertainty, changing family roles, employment concerns, and an entirely new daily routine.
In the middle of all of that, recreation, friendship, community, and joy can sometimes be treated as secondary. They should not be.
Trying an adaptive sport or activity is not only about what happens during that experience. It can help someone rebuild confidence that was shaken after an injury. Successfully taking on one new challenge can make the next opportunity feel possible.
That feeling can carry into many other parts of life, including relationships, education, employment, travel, and community involvement.
Sometimes one experience is enough to make a person ask, “If I can do this, what else might be possible?”
The weekend was also meaningful for families. Parents, spouses, children, siblings, and caregivers were able to see their loved ones take part in activities that may have once seemed out of reach. They could celebrate together, meet other families who understand the realities of life with a spinal cord injury, and become part of a larger community.
This is why The Spinal Cord Injury Law Firm chose to support the Adventurous Weekend at the Platinum level.
Our connection to the disability community goes well beyond the courtroom. We represent clients with disabilities and their families, hire talented people with disabilities, and support disability-led organizations that are creating meaningful opportunities in their communities.
We also understand that a legal result is only one part of rebuilding life after a spinal cord injury. People deserve access to the resources, relationships, experiences, and opportunities that help them create fulfilling futures.
The Adventurous Weekend brought all of those elements together.
Participants were not watching from the sidelines. They were waterskiing, playing, exploring, connecting, laughing, and challenging themselves. Families were sharing those experiences with them. Friendships were forming among people who might never have otherwise met.
Making the entire weekend free was especially important. The costs associated with living with a spinal cord injury can be significant, and adaptive recreation is not always affordable or easy to access. Sponsor support removed that barrier so families could focus on being together and enjoying the experience.
We are deeply grateful to Determined2Heal and SPINALpedia for creating such a welcoming and empowering weekend. We also thank the volunteers, adaptive recreation partners, community members, and fellow sponsors who donated their time, expertise, equipment, and resources.
