Spinal Cord Injury

Simply put, a spinal cord injury is the most expensive injury a person can have. It can occur by trauma, disease, or by medical malpractice. A spinal cord injury results in damage to the nerves protected within the bones surrounding the spinal canal. An injury can happen to anyone at any time and often results in a lack of movement and feeling below the level of injury. Depending on where the injury occurs, a person will be considered a quadriplegic (some form of immobility in all four extremities) or a paraplegic (two extremities) and will require rehabilitation at a hospital specializing in spinal cord injuries. In the United States, there are over 1.2 million people living with a spinal cord injury.

According to a Reeve Foundation study:

  • About four out of five people with spinal cord injuries are male.
  • More than half of spinal cord injuries occur in the cervical region (neck area), a third occur in the thoracic region (mid back), and the remainder occur mostly in the lumbar region (lower back).
  • Spinal cord injuries are most commonly caused by motor vehicle accidents, followed by sports-related injuries (more common in children and teenagers), falls and acts of violence.
