Spinal Cord Injury

Simply put, a spinal cord injury is the most expensive injury a person can have. It can occur by trauma, disease, or by medical malpractice. A spinal cord injury results in damage to the nerves protected within the bones surrounding the spinal canal. An injury can happen to anyone at any time and often results in a lack of movement and feeling below the level of injury. Depending on where the injury occurs, a person will be considered a quadriplegic (some form of immobility in all four extremities) or a paraplegic (two extremities) and will require rehabilitation at a hospital specializing in spinal cord injuries. In the United States, there are over 1.2 million people living with a spinal cord injury.

According to a Reeve Foundation study:

About four out of five people with spinal cord injuries are male.
More than half of spinal cord injuries occur in the cervical region (neck area), a third occur in the thoracic region (mid back), and the remainder occur mostly in the lumbar region (lower back).
Spinal cord injuries are most commonly caused by motor vehicle accidents, followed by sports-related injuries (more common in children and teenagers), falls and acts of violence.
