How Practicing Law Has Shifted During COVID-19

blog

COVID-19 has dramatically altered everyone’s daily lives from the way we grocery shop, how our kids attend school, our social outings, and many more activities. Over the past 5 ½ months we have also shifted our gears at the Spinal Cord Injury Law Firm and like so many others have been working from home. Lucky for us we have technology on our side and working in our favor. We are still striving to be the best law firm for fighting for your rights should you have sustained a spinal cord injury due to negligence of another person.

What Does Our Daily Life Look Like Now?

For many people around the world, the way a person works looks different.  It is no different over here.  Starting in March, our firm figuratively packed up and moved remote. Luckily, our infrastructure was already set up to do this as our staff works remotely in various parts of the country. But, let’s be honest, having two adults working from home and having two kids who are having to stay home due to virtual learning has been a huge curveball to many families, including mine. We have been lucky enough to find some wonderful caregivers for our children to help them stay on task and continue their education. (Major kudos to you if you’ve figured out a way to work from home AND teach your kids!) I have set up in a home office where I have my own at home legal “war room”.  With the help of the SCILF team near and far, we have set up shop and can go about our normal routine of working with my current clients, reaching out to new clients, attending virtual conventions, conducting research, and so much more all in the comfort of our own homes!

What Programs Are We Using To Stay Connected To Our Clients?

Zoom has been our greatest asset during this time. It helps us connect with our clients on a more personal level to be able to meet with them face to face (but virtually). It has allowed our staff to stay connected with group calls and has also given us the opportunity to stay connected in the law world!

We have converted all of our programs to e-programs–from fax to phone–to allow anyone, anywhere in our firm to get the work completed as long as they have internet access.  While we miss seeing each other, and our clients face-to-face, the reality is that most of our clients are located across the country, so we are used to phone calls and video calls as the main way to stay in touch.

E-signature software is also a major part of our work life right now.  With a click of a button and an email, we can execute legal documents without requiring our clients to print off pages, sign, scan and email it back to us or show up to our office in person just to execute a document.  If there is one thing we have learned during this time, providing an easy process to get the work done is more important now than ever.

How the SCILF Is Helping the SCI Community During COVID

Providing COVID related resources to our client and the Spinal Cord Injury Community has also been a part of our work.  We have always prided ourselves on not just helping people with the legal aspects of a spinal cord injury, but also providing them valuable resources to live a healthy and happy life WITH a spinal cord injury!  We have helped clients and members of the SCI community secure COVID grants and fundings during this time to help with additional costs such as gloves, supplies, food, and sanitary products to keep our community safe and healthy.

We have also helped raise awareness to the issues affecting people with SCIs during COVID including housing, access to caregiving, living with a spinal cord injury in jail during COVID, and beyond.  If anything, we have been working harder than ever because we know the needs of our community are so great during this difficult time.
